Lots of people talk to me about their blood pressure and think it is just a numbers game , like a challenge set by a personal trainer.
However, it is much more than looking at the numbers.
Sustained high blood pressure due to stress, family history or poor lifestyle leads to increased 'furring up' or narrowing of the arteries in your body.
You have to look at the impact of high blood pressure on your body to see why it is important to control this well.Lets look closer...
IN THE HEART
The coronary arteries are arteries that supply the heart muscle- the narrowing of these arteries can lead to a heart attack. The first signs you may have are increased tiredness or breathlessness on exertion. This needs an urgent GP appointment.
If you have any dull ache in the chest at rest or on exertion it warrrants IMMEDIATE attention. If you have this you need to call 000 (and leave the front door open for the ambos)
IN THE HEAD
The carotid arteries are the vessels that supply the blood to your brain. These can get furred up over time and can cause headaches and dizziness, which again needs immediate attention. A sudden severe headache should also warrant a 000 call.
THE KIDNEYS
When the arteries of the kidneys fur up it can lead to chronic kidney disease, or renal failure. You will feel extreme tiredness and maybe swelling of the ankles. Over time and untreated , the chronic diease gets worse and worse, until your body is no longer able to detoxify and dialysis is necessary. This is best diagnosed by your GP, with blood tests and a renal artery ultrasound,
